Former Gomez singer Ben Ottewell has announced his third solo album, A Man Apart, which will be followed by a national tour around Australia. Out on May 25, the record explores a range of genres, including Americana, blues and folk rock, and was recorded with good friend Sam Genders, in California and Sheffield. Ottewell will be playing in venues across the country this winter, from Perth to Melbourne to Adelaide, sneaking in some Gomez tunes in his setlist as well as fan favourites. Ottewell, who says he’s “incredibly lucky to have had some kind of 20-year run” will be supported by LA singer-songwriter BUDDY. It will be Ottewell’s third time in Australia.
A lead single, Watcher, has been released, as well an accompanying video. It’s a soothing, introspective folk song, with Ottewell’s trademark gravelly voice matching the wistful strings and thoughtful storytelling. The video is simple, featuring Ottewell playing and singing in front of various cityscapes, the one point of stability in a sea of bright lights and speeding cars. If it’s any indication of his forthcoming LP, A Man Apart is a record to watch out for. You can watch the video for Watcher below.
